Where the Sidewalk Ends
洋書Shel Silversteinといえば「The Giving Tree」で有名です。日本でも村上春樹訳の「おおきな木」で読むことができます。
先日、知り合いに教えてもらって、「Where the Sidewalk Ends: Poems and Drawings」を読み始めました。本のタイトルから分かるように、これはポエムと手書きの白黒イラストから構成されています。
私が英詩を読むのはこれが初めてです。アマゾンの対象読者年齢は4～8歳となっていますが、結構難しいです。たとえば、P.11に掲載されている詩をひとつ紹介すると
MAGIC
Sandra's seen a leprechaun,
Eddie touched a troll,
Laurie danced with witches once,
Charlie found some goblins' gold.
Donald heard a mermaid sing,
Susy spied an elf,
But all the magic I have known
I've had to make myself.
これを読んで、何を楽しめば良いのか、正直わたしには分かりません。しかも、leprechaunという英単語は初めて見ました。日本語・英語を問わず、詩を理解するのは難しいです。

Thanksgiving dinner's sad and thankless
Christmas dinner's dark and blue
When you stop and try to see it
From the turkey's point of view.
Sunday dinner isn't sunny
Easter feasts are just bad luck
When you see it from the viewpoint
Of a chicken or a duck.
Oh how I once loved tuna salad
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops too
Till I stopped and looked at dinner
From the dinner's point of view.
これは理解できますが、ポエムというには非常に皮肉な内容ですね。アマゾンのカスタマーレビューでは非常に高評価ですが、英詩を読むには私の感性が足りないような気がしました。ハードカバーで166ページもある本なので、時間があるときに少しずつ読もうと思います。
